Meet Miitaro, the feline baseball star of “Neko Pitcher”, a hit comic strip now running in The Yomiuri Shimbun in Japanese and The Japan News in English. A 1-year-old fastballer, Miitaro is the first professional feline pitcher. He throws for the fictional Nya-iants and has been quite the sensation in Japan, a country that loves cats and baseball.

In addition to Miitaro, the comic revolves around Nyai-ants skipper Ikari, catcher Hirano and other teammates, as well as members of rival teams. Miitaro’s owner, a high school girl named Yuki-chan, brings a woman’s perspective to the comic as well.

Created by manga artist Kenji Sonishi, “Neko Pitcher” appears in the Sunday supplement of The Yomiuri Shimbun. Its English version runs on Saturdays in The Japan News, a daily English paper published by The Yomiuri Shimbun. The first and second collections pf the comic strips published by Chuokoron-Shinsha Inc., have sold more than 350,000 copies. The anime version of the “Neko Pitcher” series has also aired on BS-NTV station.
